As I mentioned before, Vance doesn't rely on his spells, instead using them more as backup. He only keeps three or four spells racked at a time. They are as follows: Hellfire Lynchpins: Checkspell, Magic of Shadow, Buildup, Target gesture. Description: This is an extremely deadly spell - so deadly, that an extra lynchpin is necessary just to monitor the buildup of energies. After the checkspell lynchpin determins that the spell is intact, a black sphere forms within the caster's grip. Inside the sphere, energy builds up, superheating the air inside. When the buildup is complete, the caster points the sphere in the direction of the target, and makes a releasting gesture. At this point, the sphere bursts open, and a white-hot bolt fires at the target (this spell is sometimes called 'Plasma Bolt' in high-tech Shadows, for good reason). The caster must release the bolt within a few seconds of the buildup being complete, or the sphere will rupture (which could be serious if the first fracture occurs in the direction of the caster). The bolt should be able to blow through a man in full plate armor, shatter a passive magical shield, and otherwise be deadly enough where the best defense option is 'don't get hit'. Reversal Lynchpins: Checkspell, Magic of Shadow, Target gesture, Trigger word. Description: The Reversal spell doesn't do anything immediately when cast. Instead, it is held active until released by word and gesture. When an energy-based attack (whether mundane or magical) is used in the immediate area, the caster can gesture towards it, and it will immediately reverse its course (or be keyed to do so, if it hasn't been released yet). There is some control allowed in the process of reversal, and the chance of hitting depends on Warfare. Spells that target based on a Psychic link cannot be reflected. The Reversal spell only works against one attack, though the energy manifestation can be of any size. Wind Blast Lynchpins: Checkspell, Magic of Shadow, Direction, Target gesture. Description: Wind Blast redirects the local atmospheric gases to produce a strong gust in a particular direction. The initial blast is at full strength, and then the winds fade until it eventually dies out. The strength of the wind blast depends on the current movement of atmospheric gases (how fast the wind is blowing) and how thick the atmosphere is. It generally doesn't reach hurricane strength, though it is possible if the weather is already turbulent. Sparkle Lynchpins: Checkspell, Magic of Shadow, Dispel Word. Description: Sparkle produces an aura of magical energy that extends into the visible spectrum. This aura appears around the caster's hands, and throws off sparkles as the caster makes hand movements. The energies will fade over time, or can be negated with a word. With an extra lynchpin, 'hand-gestures', the special effects can be varied. Sparkles can be changed to juggling lights, brightness can be adjusted, and so forth.
