Rebma, City in the Sea Rebma it is said is the reflection of Amber in the sea. While it is true that the buildings and structures, and even current events often seem to follow those of Amber. However, Rebma is quite different. Rebma is a matriarchy. Most positions in government are held by women, and inheritance passes to the eldest daughter. While it is not forbidden for men to own property, it is definately unusual. Like most societies there are some professions that are female dominated and some that are male dominated. Women dominated professions include magic, trade, and law. Male dominated professions include fishing, mining, and war. Despite the risk and hardship involved the male professions pay less. Men are generally treated as less intelligent than women, and more prone to violent emotional outbursts. A woman who is acting foolish is often said to be acting like a man. There are no strong taboos in Rebma against premarital intercourse. Most Rebmans practice serial monogamy, and Rebman law reflects this. Rebma recognizes many different forms of marriage ranging from open short-term to closed permanent. By Rebman law, the women always inherits all property and any children acquired through the course of a term marriage. Stories of true love are as common in Rebma as elsewhere, and most seek a permanent love. They just don't expect to find it easily. Spells of contraception are common. Most Rebman women prefer to be married to have a second source of income before having a child. However their is no societal onus attached to having a child out of wedlock. Having a child that you cannot support on the other hand is considered a foolish. Perhaps it is a result of this sexual freedom that all property and titles are handled down the female line. For you can always tell the mother of a child, even if the father may be difficult to determine. Almost as much trade flows through Rebma as Amber. While the Faiella-Bionen is the best known route to Rebma, there are undersea routes that lead to beaches near many of the shadows in the Golden circle. Across these routes a brisk trade in merchandise flows. Along with goods, Rebma is also a market for information. While greater trade flows through Amber, it is also more restrictive. While Amber is the premire city of the Golden Circle, Amber doesn't like outsiders meddling in its internal politics. However, in Rebma it is possible for a trader from outshadow to ask questions about current wars, trade sanctions, possible political shifts. For a native of another shadow, these questions bring unwanted attention in Amber. Magic is commonplace in Rebma. It is magic that heats and illuminates the city. This same magic is used in divinations, healing, and war. Magic is controlled by a strong guild, and by Rebman law, only licensed guild members are allowed to practice magic with the bounds of the city.
