Optional Magic Rules

Multi-Level Spells:

The following rules are suggested as an alternative to multi-level
spells, as they are written in HarnMaster (1st edition). First, to upgrade
them, you need a ML 51+ in the current spell. Second, when upgrading
them, a MS/CS opens the new level at 75%/100% of the old one. Third,
they may be purchased at higher levels then the first at the start of the
game (just like other spells).

Resonance

Mages, being objects of their own convocation, can often have
problems when carrying around too many 'enchanted' items. Count the
levels of the mages' convocation involved in all items. If they
exceed the mage's Aura, there is a chance of resonance - a rough
percentage chance of 5x the excess, rolled every month. Resonance can
have anywhere from annoying to disasterous effect. As an annoyance,
an item can have one of the convocation's spells dispelled (even if
Permanent). Far worse, since the mages' attunement is part of the
problem, the mage can be adversely affected, up to and including
death.
Grey mages, being deattuned from their former convocation, have
less to worry about, though there is a second form of Resonance that
can affect them (as well as other mages). Total up ALL spell levels
involved, regardless of convocation (this includes Neutral spells).
If they exceed twice the mage's Aura, roll 5x the excess for effect.
Effects as above, with the exception that the mage will not be
personally affected by the resonance.
(At the GM's discretion, any items imbued with a natural or
artificial personality are not counted towards Resonance, as there is a
seperate Aura (of sorts) involved.)
For purposes of the above calculations, consider any spell that
is active on or nearby (within a few feet) of the mage over 50% of the
time. Though the above description mentions items, spells on oneself
(or a familiar, etc.) are considered, as well. A final note -
Resonance can occur even when an Aura is not present to interact with,
at GM's discretion. Remember that when the PC's begin to consider
making stockpiles, sleeping away from their items, etc.
