Character Background:
In
the early days of the Last War, Jarik was a young man with a
quickly-developing talent for sorcery. Raised in a village by
the Ironroot Mountains in Karrnath, Jarik managed to avoid
mandatory army service simply because his village was too small and remote
for the military to bother sending anyone to retrieve recruits.
One
day, while practicing his magic in secret in the mountains, Jarik was
approached by a beautiful woman. She introduced herself as a mighty
wizardess named Cassa, and easily seduced him with promises of magical
training and more physical pleasures. For two years, he served as
Cassa's apprentice and lover in a secret cavern in the Nightwood.
Slowly, he began to realize that while her appearance was beautiful,
Cassa's heart was as cold as ice.
He secretly prepared to depart,
but was too late. One night, he found himself strapped to a table as
he discovered Cassa's true purpose in offering him an apprenticeship - she
was about to become a lich through her dark arts, and needed a test
subject to make sure the process was safe. A week later, transformed
into a hideous creature of the undead, he was enspelled with a
geas that he would never hurt Cassa, and was unbound. He
watched helplessly as Cassa prepared a special suit of adamantine half
plate for a special protector, who would be nearly immune to magic when
wearing the armor. Cassa spoke often of a dark mistress named Vol
who had opened the way to lichdom, and looked forward to joining the ranks
of the undead.
As the weeks went on, and Cassa continued to work on the
special armor for her guardian, a plan began to form in Jarik's mind.
Jarik could not harm Cassa because of the geas she would renew every
week, but there was another way. Several months later, Cassa started
the process of transformation into a lich for both herself and her protector,
believing Jarik to be no threat to her. While she was weakened
and helpless, Jarik killed Cassa's protector, and placed her into the
protector's prepared suit of armor, which automatically bound to her soul
and sealed itself forever upon her body. He then buried her in a
deep pit, knowing that she was undead and would come to no harm. After
covering her in nearly 10 feet of dirt, he collapsed the entire
chamber. Believing her sealed away forever, he burned her
spellbooks, took what magics he felt safe stealing from her room, and fled
the cavern.
Using a hat of disguise and heavy clothing to
conceal his undead nature, Jarik worked tirelessly to create an
organization called the Spark of Life that would oppose the Blood of Vol
and its unknowing servants, the Order of the Emerald Claw. Knowing
that he needed financial support, he began to collect information about
Karrnath's military activities to send in secret to Thrane. Within a
year, the Spark of Life began receiving funding in exchange for
information, which in turn allowed Jarik to expand his spy
network.
Jarik changed his disguise every decade, but kept the same
name, proclaiming that each leader of the Spark of Life would take the
name Jarik in honor of its founder. Only a few ever learned his true
identity, and he was forced to kill more than one person who would have
revealed him as undead. Though he was not evil, the dark magics that
preserved his existence fueled his anger and fear, forcing him to
constantly struggle to maintain some core of morality.
When
King Kaius III outlawed the Blood of Vol, it was both a triumph and a
tragedy. Many members of the Spark of Life quit, as there was little
reason to continue when their primary goal had been achieved. Things
got worse when the Last War ended - Thrane stopped funding his
organization, which made it difficult to keep the Spark of Life
alive. In Jarik's eyes, Karrnath still condoned the use of undead,
and he was determined not to see another suffer his fate.
One
fateful day, Jarik met a party of adventurers with a message from the
Silver Flame - Cassa had freed herself from her prison, and was plotting
to destroy Flamekeep. Despite the risk, he chose to travel with them
to thwart Cassa's plans, and destroy her permanently. He survived
only due to his phylactery, safely hidden within the vaults of House
Kundarik. The phylactery was carried back to Thrane, where he
expected to be freed from the torture of unlife. To his great
surprise, the Keeper of the Silver Flame restored him to life.
Feeling the call of the Flame, he became a devout follower. He now
works to cleanse the stain upon his soul from decades of unlife.
