Character Background:
Caz comes from a military family. Growing up, there was no question of who her employer would be, although
her choice of career was wide open. Caz was always taught that it was her duty to serve Breland and the ideals
of her nation. Caz was also taught that just as you always sent the best person for any job, you should seek what
you are good at and practice it, because if it's worth doing, it's worth doing your best. Caz knew that because
of her race, she had certain talents that were her responsibility to hone. Her father taught her that other people
trained for years just to do what came naturally to her, and he spent much time trying to gain the skill that her
father showed for mimicry.
Her father tried to teach her his skills, but although she could follow her father's natural form, and that of
the many travelers that passed through the villages where their family was stationed, she never could match him.
She could appear as human, Valenar, Shifter, dwarf, halfling, gnome, orc and even goblin, but could never mimic
warforged or troll. While her father explained at length how to do it, she never could master the changes needed
the way she could other creatures, no matter how she tried.
When traveling, Caz and her father tried different forms and voices, Caz for practice, and her father by necessity.
However, Caz's mother was a shifter, and simply kept herself hidden when they traveled. When Caz's mother needed
to be seem, Caz would travel as another (but always different) shifter, so that she wouldn't be as distinctive.
During one move, however, Caz's father hadn't been given sufficient intelligence on the land they were traveling
through, and Caz was in shifter form. They happened to be traveling through a particularly remote village where
few had seen a shifter in years, and for good reason. A cleric of the Silver Flame had settled there, and after
wiping out the shifters in the village, had taught the villagers the evils of shifters, and how to spot them.
When the family stopped for provisions, the villagers recognized what Caz's mother was, and while they took no
direct action, word spread quickly.
The family seperated and all hit different stores for provisions to make the move faster, as was their usual pattern.
While leaving a store, Caz was struck by some young boys throwing rocks, who raised the alarm. Caz ran from them,
panicked, trying to figure out why these strangers were attacking her. Then Caz realized that she hadn't changed
to mimic the locals, and quickly paged through all the villagers she'd seen, realizing there wasn't a single villager
that wasn't human. They were even all the same kind of human, such a rare thing that it hadn't even occurred to
her.
Caz turned and stopped, refusing to be chased away by these people. While the boys continued to throw things at
her, she saw fear in their eyes, creating her chance for escape. She turned to them and raised her arms, howling
as she stretched and grew into the tallest creature she could remember how to, she became a trogolodyte, smacking
her lips and chasing the young boys.
Once the boys were out of sight, she changed into a young human girl, careful to match her hair and skin colors
to those she had seen in the village, and ran back to the wagon, where her mother was already hiding. Inside the
wagon, Caz changed into a large wagonmaster with enough bulk to hide her mother inside and led the wagon through
the town calling for “Master Orien” (one of the names her father used from time to time) and urging him to get
on the wagon, as the city was under attack.
While Caz had been taught that many won't trust a changeling, she had never seen firsthand hatred based solely
on appearance, and when she learned that there were worse things than being feared. Caz remembered that lesson
into adulthood when she enlisted.
Although Caz still had a reluctance for violence, she was able to find work that suited her once she joined the
military. It wasn't until she was placed in a mostly changeling unit and spoke with the other changelings did
she realize that she wasn't the only one who couldn't wear the face of a warforged. Caz seemed even more suited
to infiltration than the other units, although she wasn't chosen for many promotions because of her refusal to
become an assassin, or to steal more than information. Caz specialized in intelligence gathering, and a strategy
she used more than once was to be “captured”, only to free the hostages already gathered.
Meanwhile, Caz had learned not to wear the same face more often than she had to, especially when visiting her
mother and (now-retired) father. To explain the stream of travelers to their home, Caz's parents now live as an
elderly shifter couple operating a very small bed-and-breakfast just outside of Sharn, where Caz visits whenever
she can.
