Machine Quilting - Supply List

Entry level - Please have your machine (and instructional manual if possible) ready to sew. Check that your bulb works! And don't forget your foot pedal (don't ask how often that happens!)

It would also be most helpful to try to acquire a DARNING FOOT to fit your machine. Some machines come with them but as few people actually darn any more they may have to be purchased as an accessory. They shouldn't be too dear. Do not tell the salesman that you want it for quilting as he may give you the wrong foot... if anything tell him it is for free form machine embroidery.

Also useful, but more expensive, is the WALKING or EVEN FEED FOOT. It is a rather large cumbersome looking contraption that is vital for successful straight line quilting. Pfaff machines do not have such an attachment as they feel they have a built in dual feed. If you are planning to do regular machine quilting it may be worth while to purchase this attachment before the class. If you are unsure you may wish to wait, try stitching without it and then decide if you wish to invest in the foot. (Warning: 99.9% of quilters buy the foot...) I sometimes have a few generic feet for sale.

You will also need:
  • 2 Fat Quarters of a plain calico (no print - a light colour is best) 18" X 22"
  • A good quality invisible nylon thread (I strongly recommend YLI. I will have this brand available for purchase in class if you have trouble finding it.)
  • A new Denim/Jeans needle size 80 or 70... (70 is best for Invisible Thread. 80 for sewing with cotton thread. These will be available in class.)
  • A neutral coloured COTTON sewing thread... not quilting thread... NOT polyester.
  • A fat quarter of thin cotton wadding
I look forward to meeting you! We are going to have a great time!
