Ironing Image

Smile If you look and the paper heart has vanished, try looking at the underside of your iron. Chances are that it's firmly stuck to the sole plate because you positioned it wrong side up. Don't feel bad; we've all done it at least once - some of us many more times than we care to admit. It won't harm the iron. Just pull the piece off and try again: REMEMBER, shiny side always goes to the fabric!

1 Trace the heart shape below directly onto the paper side of the freezer paper. (Remember to use a pencil for this. If you use a pen and don't cut out exactly on the line, you could leave some ink on the paper; this could end up being transferred onto your fabric, which would most likely make you somewhat cranky.)

Step 2: Heart Template

3 Place your fabric on the ironing board wrong side up.

4 Set your iron on the cotton setting, and turn off the steam. Steam only makes the paper wet, and we don't need that! First press the fabric to warm it up a bit; I find that this really helps the paper to stick.

5 Now place the freezer paper appliqué shiny side on the fabric, and press. Don't slide the iron around; instead just exert a bit of pressure and let the heat do the work. Six seconds should be adequate. Once you remove the iron, let the piece cool for a moment and then your freezer paper heart will be firmly stuck to the fabric.

You have now accomplished three things:

  • The shape has been put on the fabric without needing to actually mark on the fabric. This is very useful when you are trying to mark on dark fabrics.
  • You have stabilized the fabric so it won't fray or pull off-grain.
  • You have given yourself a firm edge around your desired appliqué shape to guide you as you turn your seam allowances under.
