Marid is currently apprenticing as a woodcarver, and is
your father's choice to take over when he dies. He is
generally kind towards you, though a bit distant.

Background:

Your first memories are of traveling, as your parents left their
native land of Orbaal to settle in the Kaldorian village of Loban.
As a child, you were treated as an outsider by many of the
villagers, and only had a few friends, although you treasured them.
Several times during your youth, you became subject to dizzy
spells. They never lasted long, but on a few occasions you actually
passed out. One time, while you recovered from the latest of these
occurrences, you overheard your parents talking with another family,
who said they found you unconscious, and saying strange things.
Rumors began to circulate of you and your mother being witches, but
the talk eventually died down.
At the age of 13, it was time for your friends to take up
apprenticeships. You tearfully bid them goodbye, but, on an
impulse, got them to agree to return to Loban in 5 years, at the end
of the fall harvest. They promised to do their best (since they had
no way of knowing how long they would be apprentices), and went
their separate ways.
You stayed in Loban, and tended the sheep owned by your family.
During this time, you learned how to be self-sufficient, as your
parents spent much of their time making ends meet. Your father did
manage to take time to teach you how to use your shepherd staff to
defend yourself, and you taught yourself how to use the sling as a
means of entertainment, during those boring hours spent in the
fields.
Also, you began to discover that your dizzy spells were the mark
of unusual powers. The few times you did continue to have dizzy
spells, they always marked something of import. Once, when a sheep
was injured, you went to tend it, but passed out as you touched it.
When you awoke, the sheep was no longer bleeding. Another time, you
saw a vision of your eldest brother cutting himself while whittling,
and saw a bandage on his hand when you came home. You gradually
began to discover how to use these abilities, though they have never
been reliable, and usually exhaust you when you try and call them
forth. You think that you are a witch of some sort, and have kept
this secret from everyone, though you often wish you had someone to
share it with.
Your mother has occasionally hinted that you should begin looking
for a husband, but so far you have kept it from becoming an issue.
You worry about it as well, for you feel it would bring an end to
the freedom you currently enjoy. Also, if you had to marry, you'd
rather marry one of your friends from childhood, whom you hope you
could learn to love.
Recent events have been a cause for concern. Last spring, Sir
Kathel (the local lord) decided to expand his fief across the river,
into the wilderness claimed by a barbarian tribe known as the
Taelda. A few weeks afterwards, the work teams sent to clear the
land were ambushed by a Taelda war party. Three villagers died; six
more were injured, two of them women.
Sir Kathel responded by hiring mercenaries from Tashal, which
went into the forest. Ten days later, they located and attacked an
undefended Taelda village. Many Taelda men, woman, and children
died before the remainder fled. From what you've heard, Sir Kathel
believes that his raid taught Taelda a lesson.
However, a few months ago, a new peril emerged. There apparently
were three killings at nearby Amba Mine. The mine was closed,
because the miners refused to continue working, and has stayed that
way. Then, killings started to occur in the village, and the
villagers are scared. In fact, you are no longer allowed to tend
the sheep alone, as your parents fear for your safety.
No one has seen or heard the killer, despite the fact that one
murder took place in broad daylight. The bodies of the victims are
never found, though bloodstained clothing sometimes is. Some
believe that the Taelda are taking revenge, others believe it is the
work of demons. The latter scares you almost as much as the
killings themselves, for the villagers may eventually remember the
rumors that associated you and your mother with witchcraft, and who
knows what they might do at that point.
After the third killing, a petition was brought to Sir Kathel by
Everard, the village reeve, stating that the peasants could not work
the fields "for fear the killer will slay our wives and daughters in
our absence". Sir Kathel (supposedly in his cups) ranted and raved,
and promised everything from severe punishment to generous gifts in
an attempt to get the villagers to begin the harvest. Finally, two
days ago, Everard was arrested, and Sir Kathel has promised to hang
him if the villagers continue their rebellious ways. The villagers
have not returned to the fields, and when Hakon of Ersat's bloody
tunic was found just last night, it did nothing to help matters.
You are worried at the present turn of events, for if harsh
weather comes along before the harvest is finished, the majority of
it will be lost, and the village will starve in the winter. The
only good news is that your childhood friends will be returning,
though if the worst occurs, it will be a bittersweet reunion, indeed.
